01The idea

News apps repeat one story twenty times. This one tells it once.

No advertising, no clutter, no infinite scroll. Fresh News does four things, in order, and shows its working at every step.

The full pipeline
  1. i.

    Collect

Headlines from 63 open RSS and Atom feeds across geopolitics, technology, science, economics and positive developments. No news API, no account, polite and cached requests.

  2. ii.

    Group

Reports about the same event are clustered together, and independent outlets are counted, not twenty copies of one wire story.

Meridian WireHarbour LedgerNorthgate ReviewMeridian Wire (copy)3 independent outlets
  3. iii.

    Build your edition

A short, balanced list ranked by importance, your topic weights, recency and diversity, with a plain-language reason for every story.

Reported by 4 independent outlets Included to keep your topics balanced
  4. iv.

    Explain

Your own AI provider, or a local model, writes each story as cited statements. A mechanical check compares them to the sources. Stories that fail are not shown.

Annual inflation slowed to 2.4%1, and markets now expect a first cut in spring2.

02Every claim, traced

Statement under review

“The central bank left its rate unchanged as annual inflation slowed to 2.4%1.”

Validated against 3 sources. Shown in your edition.

Cited, checked, or not shown.

The model never writes free text. It returns structured statements, each with citations, and Fresh News checks every one of them mechanically: numbers, dates, names, quotes and support. A story that fails after one repair is thrown away.

Honest about limits.

The check catches invented specifics. It cannot prove a story is right, and it cannot catch a paraphrase that reverses a relationship. The app says so, every time.

03Ask the archive

Questions answered only from the reports.

Ask a follow-up and Fresh News searches what it has stored, sends the matching reports to your provider, and checks the answer against them. If the reports don’t cover it, it tells you, instead of guessing.

  • Local full-text search, instant and offline
  • Questions keep their history and their evidence
  • Delete any question, or all of them, at any time

Why haven’t insurers lowered premiums yet?

Insurers say premiums will follow how ships are actually treated in the strait, not the announcement. The inspection rules are still disputed.

Who signed for the third country?

The stored reports don’t cover that.

Bring your own AI. Or none at all.

Without a provider you still get a ranked edition of headlines grouped by event. Only edition stories are written, results are cached, and automatic spending is off by default.

04Your data stays yours

Nothing to sell, because nothing is collected.

The only things that leave your computer are ordinary feed requests, the short excerpts you choose to send to your AI provider, and the sync files you put in your own folder.

Exactly what is stored and sent

No account

Nothing to sign up for. Open the app and the first edition arrives in a minute or two.

No analytics

No telemetry, no crash upload, no update check. Crash reports stay in a local folder.

Keys in the keychain

API keys go to the system keychain, are never shown again, and never travel in a URL.

Headlines, not articles

Only headlines and feed summaries cut to 500 characters are stored. Originals are one click away.

On your devices

One SQLite file on your computer, daily backups beside it. No hosted backend at all.

Fully local, if you like

Pick Ollama or LM Studio and nothing about your reading ever leaves the machine.

05On your phone

Synced through a folder. No server in between.

Pick the same folder on both devices: iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Syncthing, anything the Files app can open. Your computer writes the edition; the phone reads it, and your saved stories and topics flow back.

Desktop builds Your folder iPhone reads

The phone always says how old its edition is. Announcing news built after the last sync would need a push server, which Fresh News deliberately does not have.

Corrections & clarifications

What has been checked, and what hasn’t.

Verified

The macOS desktop release build on real data, the iPhone app on a physical iPhone 15 Pro Max, every automated test, and a security self-review.

Not yet verified

Windows and Linux (they compile in CI), hosted providers with a real key, iCloud Drive behaviour on the phone, briefings firing unattended for days, signed installers.

Known limits

Stories rest on headlines and short summaries, so they are thin when feeds say little. Built-in sources are still unreviewed for public distribution.

Tomorrow morning

Read less. Understand more.

Set a time, pick your topics, and wake up to a short edition where every sentence shows its source.
