DocsUsing Fresh News

AI providers

Connect a hosted AI service with your own key, or run a local model with Ollama or LM Studio.

Fresh News works without an AI provider. To get written, cited explanations of each story, add one in Settings > AI providers > Add provider and choose a Service.

Hosted services

OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Mistral, Groq, Together AI, Fireworks, xAI, Cerebras, or any other OpenAI-compatible address.

  1. Choose the service. The endpoint and a suggested model are filled in for you.
  2. Paste your API key. It is required for every hosted service: the form will not save without it, and the backend refuses too. Get a key opens the service’s page for creating one.
  3. Press Test connection. If the suggested model has been renamed, use Load the provider’s model list.

The key goes to the system keychain and is never shown again. It travels in request headers only, never in a URL, and redirects are not followed, so it cannot be forwarded to another host. Remote endpoints must use https://.

Local models

Ollama

A model that runs on your computer, no key needed. Fresh News checks that Ollama is installed and starts it for you. If it is not installed you are offered the download or a different provider. Download a model once:

ollama pull llama3.2

Then pick it in the Model box. Fresh News starts Ollama whenever it needs it, and stops it when you quit, but only if it started it.

LM Studio, or another local address

Enter the address. A key is required unless the address is on your own computer or network.

What it costs

  • Only the stories in your edition are written.
  • Results are cached, and nothing is regenerated unless the sources or the model change.
  • Automatic writing and scheduled writing are off by default.
  • A local model keeps everything on your computer and costs nothing per story.

What is sent

Only the selected reports’ outlet, date, headline and short feed summary (at most 500 characters). Never full article text, never URLs, never your data, never other stories. Requests go only to the provider assigned to the task; if it fails, the failure is shown and nothing is silently rerouted to another provider.
