Reading a story

Citations, where sources differ, and how each story is checked before you see it.

Open any story in Today to read its explanation. Each one follows the same shape:

  • What happened
  • Why it matters
  • Where sources differ
  • Background
  • What is still uncertain

Citations

Every statement carries numbered citations. Click one to see the outlet, its headline and a link to the original. Fresh News links to and attributes the reporting; it never republishes articles.

How this story was checked

At the bottom of each story, How this story was checked lists the model that wrote it and what the automatic fact check found. The model does not write free text: it returns structured, cited statements, and the app compares each one with its sources:

Check What it catches
Numbers Figures that do not appear in a cited report
Dates Days, months and years that do not match
Names People, places and organisations not in the cited text
Quotations Quotes that are not verbatim, too long, or unattributed
Support Statements without a real citation
Markup and language Links, HTML or instruction-like text

Stories that fail after one repair attempt are not shown.

The check catches invented specifics. It cannot prove a story is right, and it cannot catch a paraphrase that reverses a relationship. For anything important, open the sources.

AI actions

AI actions in the app, like Summarize and Update stories, are shown as gradient text rather than filled buttons, so you can always tell which actions call your provider.
